Comedy Promotes Values:

According to Henri Bergson, comedy promotes social and moral values because we laugh at antisocial and anti-moral behaviors. One scenario of this can be racism. If someone came upon a Muslim man with his turban, someone would immediately make 911 jokes or racist jokes towards the woman's ethnicity or her country. People would find it funny because they would use a Muslim accent to make these jokes and that is very racist. This is an antisocial and anti-moral behavior and it shows that not doing this and not being racist promotes social and moral values.

  1. I liked the connection you made. Have you seen this happen in person? I know that I have witnessed 9/11 jokes which I think are awful.

  2. I think your description of Bergson's ideas are really relevant today regarding real life stereotyping and jokes. I think comedy in this case is a serious issue which brings light to our downfalls as a society. You highlighted the downfalls of the society more than any other blog I've seen so far.

  3. I like example though I don't agree with your generalization for example when you said '' If someone'' I think you should have put something specifying a particular group of people, not every one. For example '' If some people''

  4. Yes, I agree with you. It's not right to make fun of people based on their religion and personal beliefs.

  5. I agree with you and I think your picture is a good one because stereotypes are a good example, even though it is very wrong

  6. I like this example because it is so true and so wrong of people. I totally agree with it.

  7. This is a great example! I know many people who deal with these types of jokes all the time and are deeply offended by it. However, the people making the jokes don't see anything wrong with it. The fact that we are so blind to the pain that racist jokes may cause is really a big problem that needs to be addressed.

  8. this example is great because we are provided with the knowledge of how some see no wrong doing. They have not been taught the difference they have no knowledge of historic values. Yet they still make racial slurs. Its disappointing that this is still the world we live in today.

  9. This is a great example because it is very true in our society. Thankfully most people are not really racist and they are just joking.

  10. This is very true and a great example. Reminds me of my friend who always cracks messed up jokes but it makes us understand the moral value behind it.

  11. Unfortunately, this is a true yet harsh fact about our society. The comedy shines the light on the downfalls of our society. People use racist as a comedic platform and its really wrong, in my opinion.

  12. Sadly, this is true in our society and it's unfortunate that these people are harshly judged before meeting them. Although, it does highlight Bergson's idea very well.

  13. This is a very good example. Society is too quick to judge; we should allow our self to be open rather than closed minded. You talked about the jokes on racism very clearly. Do you think it's possible for everyone to change and accept everyone for who they truly are?

  14. Sad to say but this is true, well put. I like the picture you put and the message that goes with it. People are quick to judge.

  15. I just like to say that it's sad that when comedy comes into play with racism, it is okay to a certain point, but it still show how ignorant yet funny comedy can get.
